United School Employees of Pasco declared an impasse Tuesday in contract negotiations with the Pasco County School District, setting the stage for a third party to intervene. The union notified the state's Public Employees Relations Commission, which means a special master will be assigned to conduct a hearing and make a recommendation to the school board. The union declared the impasse after the school district cancelled a negotiating session scheduled for Wednesday, Lynne Webb, president of the union, said in a statement. The Pasco County School District is working out a plan to set things right after an audit showed 43 employees have been either paid too much or too little over the years. Some of the errors date back to the 1980s. The total amount overpaid to 17 employees was $120,398. The total amount underpaid to 26 employees was $143,866. The district has about 10,000 employees. In most cases, the pay mistakes happened because the employees were given credit for too much or too little experience when they were hired or when they moved to a different position. One teacher hired in the 1985-1986 school year owes the district the largest individual dollar amount -- $21,650. ...more
