We have been subjected to the ads of presidential candidates for almost a year. To think that this will continue, on an increased basis, for almost another year once the primary elections are over, is enough to drive one mad. At this writing, the supposed "front runners" are sitting Congressional senators. To me this means that nothing will change in Washington if either one wins the office. Of course, they harp on the fact that they are knowledgeable, as they have been in the Senate so many years and know what is going on. They will be making all kinds of statements of what they will do for "you." I only think of what they have been doing for "us" these past many years. Such as taking $1.96 trillion from the Social Security Fund since 1968. From 1968 to 1999, ( a 12-year period), they took $830.8 billion From 2000 to 2006, they have taken $1.14 trillion. ...more

Illegals Drain Economy After reading the letter from Mr. Deron Mikal, I have concluded that he does not care at all for the American worker. All he seems interested in getting something cheap. Based on his way of thinking, why should we have any labor in this country? Let's just outsource it to someone who can do it cheaper. ...more

It's painful to see Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney having to defend his religion. It's also sad that some Americans just can't get past the "religion thing" with candidates, and make their decisions based solely on their religion, or their supposed lack thereof. That said, what Romney needs to defend is his frequently changing stance on important issues. That's where his campaign is falling down. By every standard, Romney is a good American and has been extremely successful as a businessman and as a politician. He's a Mormon, too, and for a fairly large number of evangelical Christians, that's enough to not vote for him for president. ...more

I am writing in response to two letters to the editor in the Highlands Today of Nov. 17. I agreed with both letters wholeheartedly. First, the letter from Don Streeter. Sir, I, too, think it is a good idea to vote all incumbents out of office. When our elected officials refuse to listen or acknowledge what is in the best interest of their constituents, we use our most powerful tool available. We "un-elect" them. Yes, this may be a situation of throwing the baby out with the bath water, in that the very few good elected officials will lose their positions of trust, but we, the voters, desperately need to clean house. ...more

Regarding 'Spending The Future' (front page, Oct. 12): Surprisingly, current and past county commission members have nearly spent all the projected tax revenue. These commissioners, like homeowners who irresponsibly borrowed (I mean gambled) on future home values, have put Hillsborough County taxpayers in jeopardy. ...more
