PORT RICHEY -- They used to have a joke at the Pasco County Public Transportation offices. "Maybe we should paint faces on the windows so people will think the buses are full," Adelaida "Adie" Reyes, the county's community services director, said, referring to PCPT's fixed-route bus system. The Pasco transportation manager, Mike Carroll, smiled at the recollection. He and Reyes can now look back at that former piece of in-house gallows humor and smile. Even the people who run it will admit the Pasco County Public Transportation bus system for years had more good intentions than riders. When the PCPT system first began rolling, Pasco officials felt the buses were something the county should have, even if there were only a relative handful of people willing to climb aboard. It now has riders but could have more if it were easier to use. ...more

During an interview with Pasco County Public Transportation Community Services Director Adelaida "Adie" Reyes and Transportation Manager Mike Carroll about the growing use of PCPT buses, Suncoast News report Klint Lowry asked what sort of marketing tools they use to promote thei service. "I'd say our best promoters are the people who are using our service," Reyes said. "If we are reliable, they will come back." So Lowry decided to take a ride. ...more

The Pasco County Public Transportation system is facing an interesting dilemma. Just when rising gasoline prices might be tempting some to park their private vehicles and climb aboard a bus, PCPT officials are seeking County Commission approval for 100 percent fare increases for the county's fixed-route bus system and paratransit service for people with disabilities. PCPT, not surprisingly, is not immune from rising energy costs. ...more
