Mr. Dettwiller, your conservative desires are understandable but what do they have to do with what actually happened over the last eight years? Where did they play in when Bush suspended habeas corpus (protection from unlawful detention) and used the Patriot Act to trample citizen's rights? ...more

Refer to Mr. Ludacer's literal repeat of his editorial concerning the Patriot Act and Major Johnston's volatile diatribe about our efforts in Iraq. It's a shame Highlands Today can't find something new to accept instead of simply allowing a repeat of an earlier editorial from Mr. Ludacer or the kind of attack mounted by the major. It seems the major has an axe to grind with the military, apparently because he could not advance beyond the rank of major. Personally, I didn't get beyond the lower ranks of the enlisted men but I didn't and don't blame politics for that. 1 simply recognize that I did not apply myself to do any better and the major doesn't seem to be able to face that fact about himself. He chooses to pass the blame to politicians, for whom I often also have little love lost but they aren't the bullies standing in the way of personal development. ...more

The Patriot Act has circumvented our basic rights. I personally have experienced the hand of the government from the local to the federal level. I for one have worked my butt off to accomplish my goals through legal means. My own government has treated me with less respect than that afforded to illegal immigrants or newly arrived Cubans. I am waiting for them to knock my door down claiming I am a terrorist or I am plotting to overthrow. I would rather die than be treated with such disrespect from our overbearing, misled government! ...more

The Patriot Act was not intended to circumvent basic civil rights. The purpose of the Patriot Act is to better assist U.S. law enforcement in fighting terrorism here in the United States and abroad. Remember Sept.11? The initial act was voted for by the Senate 98 to 1, one of the few decisions agreed upon by both Republicans and Democrats. The act breaks down the barrier between the CIA and FBI so they can share information about terrorists. Perhaps had that been done earlier, we would have avoided the Sept.11 attack and saved 3,000 innocent American lives. Many of the objections regarding the Patriot Act are actually allowed under previous and existing law, i.e., tools already used against drug dealers and other criminals. The act basically expanded them to cover terrorism and accordingly, made our nation safer. ...more
