TAMPA - The mullet. Gimmick. Hollywood slickster. As it became obvious Barry Melrose would be the Lightning's new coach, many fans were not pleased with the decision to hire someone who has not been behind the bench in 13 years. We know this because those people have access to e-mail, message boards and telephones. Some of them have interesting vocabularies. ...more

Mark Twain once quipped, "Everybody complains about the weather, but no one does anything about it." That's not entirely true. A lot of us move away from it. That's why Florida is about to crack along I-10 and become an independent island, which apparently wouldn't disturb the Democrats too much since Floridians have never seemed to be able to develop the knack of voting in the first place, not withstanding that most Floridians are not natives of this state in the first place. SEBRING – The search for an executive director for Florida's Heartland Rural Economic Development Initiative will contine Monday, June 2 when the selection committee meets in Sebring. Six candidates for the position are scheduled to be interviewed, according to Roger Hood, who is a member of the committee. The FHREDI board of directors' regular meeting will be held Monday, June 16 at the Agri-Civic Center in Sebring. A recommendation will likely be made from the committee to the board at that time. Following the retirement of Lynn Topel earlier this year, the board advertised the position. The committee chose three candidates to be interviewed and offered the position to the top two, but both declined. Salary might have been an issue with those two individuals, according to Hood, who is also a member of the board. ...more

SEBRING – Just three months ago, Highlands County's gain of Mandy Hines as the new director of the housing department was Desoto County government's loss.
