Regarding "Bedlam plagues clunker program" (Aug. 2): In America, it seems, we have a tendency to buy new and dispose of old items even if they are still usable. An idea: Do not destroy the vehicles. I am sure that at least 25 percent to 50 percent are drivable. Maybe the miles per gallon might not be the best, but donate them to the Salvation Army, Goodwill, VFW or the Kidney Foundation. Maybe even our military and their families could use a vehicle. ...more

Many of Pasco's business and government leaders turned out last week perhaps hoping one of the Southeast's top bank economists had some words of hope for the county's struggling economy. Mark Vitner, senior economist of regional banker Wachovia, was the featured speaker at a luncheon held as part of the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce's Business Development Week. David Penoyer picked up 31 votes during an unofficial recount today, but not enough to win a seat on the Temple Terrace City Council. Penoyer fell short by 53 votes to overtake Mary Jane Neale, who was elected to the board in November. The 36-year-old environmental engineer said he doesn't plan to pursue any further action to challenge the outcome of the race. ...more
