No one would argue that interim City Manager Ellen Posivach has had her hands full since taking that position nearly three months ago. So busy, in fact, that it wasn't until the City Council's March 10 meeting that she got around to the small matter of being properly paid for the job she's been doing. Posivach presented an outline for a contract proposal at the meeting. While the Council agreed - for the most part - that she has been doing a fine job and the current terms of employment need to be reviewed, they decided a bit of negotiating was in order. ...more

Unlike many other cities, Tarpon Springs has two commercial "main streets." The focus downtown is on arts and antiques. The nationwide economic downtown is offering few signs it is about to reverse course. This has government on all levels scrambling to keep spending in line with falling revenue. Under such circumstances, public officials should welcome whatever help they can get in shouldering this burden. The city of Tarpon Springs' recent attempt to solicit proposals from firms interested in installing a security lighting system at Cycadia Cemetery met with disappointing results. Interim City Manager Mark LeCouris said the city received a letter of interest from only one firm. It suggested a lighting system costing approximately $162,000. It would have ringed the cemetery's perimeter and would not have been controlled by sensors. ...more
