A public hearing has been set for Oct. 12 on a law that would ban new murals in the downtown historic district. The proposed ordinance also would forbid murals in historic residential districts. There's an exemption for existing murals and ones that are being painted. Some people have been alarmed at the proliferation of murals in the downtown core. Members of the Historic Resources Board and Planning Board have voted to recommend the proposed law. Seven murals have gone up in the city during the last few months, including three in the historic downtown district.
