On the night of April 13, 2007, the Ridgewood High School baseball team was in the midst of suffering only its sixth loss of the season, at cross-town rival Gulf. Ben Koenigsfeld, the Rams' standout shortstop and pitcher, went 4-for-4 on the evening with three doubles and two runs scored, despite the eventual loss. Zoom ahead 365 days and nearly 1,000 miles to the north, the Army baseball finished off a doubleheader sweep of arch foe Navy in dominant fashion, winning 10-2. ...more

While Sebring High School baseball players are relishing in advancing to the regional finals in Class 4-A for the second consecutive year, the school's soccer players – as well as those in Avon Park and Hardee County – are wondering if they will even have a season next year. There is a desperate need for referees as a result of the Central Florida Ridge Soccer Officials Association announcing that it no longer has the manpower to accommodate both Polk and Highlands counties in the next school year. The three schools could see their programs be dropped if local officials are not found. We hope that won't happen. ...more

SEBRING –– Lightning in a bottle was what the 2007 Sebring High School baseball team was if you ask Blue Streaks head coach Hoppy Rewis. "We had an amazing ride," Rewis said. "That was a great group of kids. We had to run them out of the batting cages. They played with no fear and was the definition of a team. They never gave up, which was evident in that they scored a ton of runs with two outs." Last year, the Streaks rode the crest of a wave that saw the team defeat defending regional champion Tampa Jesuit 4-2 to reach the state semifinals for the first time since 1966. "I remember going crazy when we beat [Jesuit]," Sebring first baseman Tony Vazquez said. "Last year, we had a team full of all-stars and we played hard until the final out.
