Sheila and Michael Brewer are accustomed to rescuing cats, dogs and unwanted farm animals – but not a reptile so big they don't have a dog crate large enough for it. But that's what happened last Thursday when they came across a 4-foot iguana sunning itself outside a medical building in Pinellas Park. Saturday's Pet Adoption Expo at the Florida State Fairgrounds found new homes for 406 animals, officials said. Visitors snapped up the 16 dogs and 10 cats from Hillsborough County Animal Services. Other animals were brought to the expo by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and various other rescue groups, including Little Miracles Rabbit Rescue and Sir Snuffy's Hedgehog Sanctuary, both of which had animals who found new homes, said animal services spokeswoman Marti Ryan. ...more

The first 10 from a group of dogs rescued from a North Carolina puppy mill this month are going up for adoption today at the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Tampa Bay.
