Late last week, Gov. Charlie Crist released his proposed budget for the state's 2011 fiscal year, which begins July 1. Crist decided to forgo running for another four years as governor this year in favor of what initially seemed to be a shoo-in candidacy for the U.S. Senate. So the proposed state budget for fiscal 2011 the governor made public last week will be his last, at least for the foreseeable future. It appears Crist is trying to go out on an optimistic note. As a Sun 'n Lake resident, I would like to thank Florida Hospital and Tanglewood for giving Gene Gangemi their proxy votes for our election on Jan. 22. He had the overwhelming support of the residents but needed their support to ensure a victory. The board members who have controlled Sun 'n Lake for years have done so by getting the large landowner proxy votes. The pool of these voters has dwindled because of their failure to pay their assessments. Therefore, those that remained became critical players in this election. Gene Gangemi stepped up to the plate and announced his candidacy, win or lose, on day one. However, our current election rules allow a person to solicit proxy votes without a formal announcement. It allows them to "test the waters" to see if they can get enough committed proxy votes to win. If not, they can say "they decided not to run or are going to hang it up." ...more
