Bad idea

Editor:

As one of only two people who spoke out against the proposed renewal of New Port Richey's "alcoholic beverages in the park" ordinance at the Oct. 20 City Council meeting, I was dismayed, but not surprised, that council is moving forward with extending, and perhaps expanding, this controversial ordinance. I have been an active and vocal opponent of this issue for many years and am saddened that the vast majority of residents, 69 percent, who voted against this idea several years ago, have been totally forgotten.

If nothing else the council deserves credit for having a session that dealt primarily with this issue. Unless some things change before the Nov. 7 council meeting, however, it appears that the council is poised to adopt a new ordinance that will only further erode the family-friendly environment that is part and parcel of New Port Richey's reputation.

If the adoption of the ordinance is a foregone conclusion, I ask council to consider an idea proposed by Councilwoman Ginny Miller. She suggested that permitted special events have an "alcohol-free zone" in which beer and wine would not be allowed. If it is going to adopt a new ordinance, I hope council moves forward with this idea.

Scary scenario

Editor:

The nation is in a severe economic downturn brought about by unmanageable foreign-owned debt. There has been a series of democratically elected but corrupt governments only interested in holding power and unwilling to make the difficult choices needed to solve the nation's problems.

The country is in the aftermath of a war that has wreaked havoc on the economy, breeding scapegoating and demonizing.

There is political stagnation and deterioration, with the Left and Right increasingly radical and strident and blaming each other for the nation's problems, rather than working together to solve them.

The man elected to head the nation has promised hope and change. The year is 1933, the nation is Germany and the leader is Adolf Hitler.

Don't sign it

Editor:

I agree with Richard Maxwell's Oct. 24 letter that President Obama should not sign the United Nations Climate Change Treaty. Under our Constitution, however, all treaties must be ratified by the Senate. So, even if Obama signs it, it won't be binding unless there are at least 60 idiots in the Senate dumb enough to vote for it.
