Essay contest

The Pasco County Supervisor of Elections Office, in partnership with the Pasco Council of Chambers, is taking entries for the essay contest for "Freedom Requires Responsibility," a contest for the county's fifth-graders.

The writer of the winning 500-word essay will receive $500 from the Council of Chambers. The award will be presented at the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce general membership meeting, on Veteran's Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Residence Inn Tampa Suncoast Parkway. State Rep.

Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, will announce the winner. Essays will be judged by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Kids Voting Tampa Bay will sponsor the second-place prize, four tickets to a Tampa Bay Lightning game. The third-place finisher will receive a new bicycle donated to the contest.

Contest information has been distributed to fifth-grade teachers at all 45 elementary schools in the Pasco School District and five charter schools.

All essays must be 500 words, typed and include the student's first and last name, ID number, school name, homeroom teacher's name, a word count and a contact phone number.

Essays must turned in, e-mailed or mailed by Friday, Oct. 30. Mailed essays should bear an Oct. 30 postmark. In West Pasco, entries should be sent to: the West Pasco Chamber, 5443 Main St., New Port Richey, FL 34652. The e-mail address is jalpine@westpasco.com.

Rasmussen open house

The Holiday campus of Rasmussen College, 2127 Grand Blvd., will hold an open house for potential students from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, Saturday, Oct. 24.

Visitors will be able to speak with financial aid officers about tuition and scholarship opportunities and participate in guided tours led by current Rasmussen College students.

Attendees can learn about all education tracks, including the campus's newly-launched associate's degree program in early childhood education, in addition to the college's associate's degree program in business management and bachelor's degree program in internet marketing.

'Black & White' dinner

Bishop Larkin Catholic School will present its ninth annual A Dinner in Black & White at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at Spartan Manor, 6121 Massachusetts Ave., New Port Richey.

The annual school fundraiser will include cocktails, dinner, dancing, entertainment, raffles and both silent and live auctions.

The school is still accepting donations of items, advertisements for a professionally printed program and sponsorships for the event.

Parents, teachers and students are all joining together to be a part of this event though creating class items, sending in donations for class theme baskets, soliciting local businesses, and putting themselves on the Auction block with items such as a "Lunch Fiesta with our Spanish Teacher" and "Principal for the Day."

All proceeds from this fundraiser go toward the general operating expenses of the school. Tickets are $75; cocktail attire is suggested.
