Good meeting

Editor:

I would like to thank city staff and all of those who attended the Oct. 29 special meeting of the New Port Richey City Council.

The purpose of this meeting was twofold: helping educate residents on the current H1N1 vaccination campaign; and coordinating city department assets so that they could work in tandem with hospital officials if the flu pandemic worsened here in West Pasco.

Specifically, I want to thank CEO John Couris and his staff who attended from Morton Plant North Bay Hospital, as well as CEO Kathyrn Gillette and her staff from Community Hospital of New Port Richey. Both groups did a great job in setting forth contingency plans, and welcomed the opportunity to work closely with city officials in any way we could assist in the unlikely event of any number of triage situations.

Additionally, I thank Dr. David Johnson, the Pasco County Health Department director, for all the valuable information he provided.

I also appreciate the attendance and contributions from Pasco Sheriff Bob White and Pasco Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Duncan Hitchcock, both of whom provided a status on how the issue is being handled in their large county departments.

Finally, be advised that the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would like to direct residents to www.FLU.gov for the latest information regarding the H1N1 pandemic. Additionally, as Dr. Johnson pointed out, Florida residents can bookmark www.MYFLUSASAFETY.com for additional flu-related information of a more regional nature.

Dumb decision

Editor:

Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty raises rates on insurance for heavily unemployed Pasco and Hernando counties and lowers them for Pinellas and Hillsborough.

Why?

Could it be politics?

We've had a good year for insurance in Florida, but the insurers are not satisfied.

Those living on the edge, however, surely will be pushed over and the tax base will shrink further.

So far, 58,000 people have left the state this year.

Is Mr. McCarty trying for an even 100,000?

It's like Forest Gump's momma said, "Stupid is as stupid does." This year's award goes to Mr. McCarty.
