Heart Institute to celebrate 20th anniversary

HUDSON - A pair of events will help celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Heart Institute at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point.

Hospital officials invite the public to a ceremony 3:30 - 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at the institute's Entrance D, at 14000 Fivay Road

Light refreshments will be served, according to hospital spokesman Kurt Conover. Call 727-869-5498 or 1-877-442-2362 toll free to check if space is still available and make reservations.

Milestones of the Heart Institute will be recalled.

The following week, the hospital is sponsoring an educational presentation for the public 2 - 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at the hospital conference center.

"Prevention of obesity, heart attacks and strokes will be the topic.

Dr. Rao Musunuru, the cardiologist instrumental in establishing the Heart Institute at Regional Medical Center, will outline ways to "overcoming overweight."

Musunuru has earned many distinctions, including the 2005 American Heart Association National Physician of the Year.

His son, Dr. Kiran Musunuru, a clinical and research fellow in cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, both in Boston, will be speaking on prevention of heart disease.

He will emphasize genetic aspects of cardiovascular disease.

Kiran Musunuru, who grew up in Pasco County, published his first medical textbook at age 19, as an undergraduate at Harvard. He has authored medical articles and book chapters extensively since then. Dr. David Johnson, director of Pasco County Health Department, will speak on various preventive health programs.

Pasco School Superintendent Heather Fiorentino will discuss nutrition, exercise and other health programs for students.

Susan Arnett, president of United Way of Pasco County, will share her personal experiences with benefits of sustained weight loss.

Pasco Sheriff Bob White will share his personal experiences of surviving a heart attack.
