NEW PORT RICHEY - With needy families struggling through the recession, some mothers could be forced to choose between buying food or diapers for a baby.
That's why organizers of the Diaper Drop benefit are asking people to donate packs of diapers at collection sites at local H&R Block offices.
"The community has really come out for us" so far during the campaign, according to Wendy Seymour, community liaison for Healthy Start Coalition of Pasco.
Diaper Drop continues through April 14, Seymour said.
The need remains great, Seymour observed.
Many families that are struggling financially do not qualify for cash assistance, Seymour pointed out.
Food stamps cannot be used to purchase diapers, she added.
The diaper benefit boosts the Healthy Start program, a free, voluntary program for pregnant women or babies up to three years of age to help reduce the risk of premature birth, low-birth-weight babies and infant mortality.
Local H&R Block offices participating as Diaper Drop collection sites include:
•New Port Richey - 4746 U.S. 19, 4821 U.S. 19, Suite 5; 4215 Little Road; 9342 Little Road; and 6907 Congress St.
•Port Richey - 9409 U.S. 19, Suite 103.
•Holiday - 3342 U.S. 19.
•Hudson - 11803 S.R. 52 and 12111 U.S. 19.
