Hudson-area drivers complain about U.S. 19 access and rightly so. U.S. 19 is said to be the most dangerous road in Florida and perhaps the whole USA. This is basically because of the numerous uncontrolled U-turns and left turns on this busy thoroughfare.
When Wal-Mart and the county started to look at access to the site in Hudson, Wal-Mart looked at houses on Dipaola Drive with the idea of buying a few, demolishing them and installing a traffic signal here as an access into the site as well as the one at Beacon Woods.
Although there are several examples on Little Road and U.S. 19, the county said a traffic light at Leisure Beach and Dipaola Drive would be too close to the existing light at Beacon Woods.
The people at Leisure Beach had been pushing for a long time for controlled access to U.S. 19 but were turned down. Now Leisure Beach traffic has a difficult time turning left onto U.S. 19.
The county had a set of blinders on when planning the access to the Hudson Wal-Mart, although they had experience with the Port Richey site, where they had to improve access because of heavy traffic at U.S. 19 and Ridge Road. Hudson residents must put their lives at stake unnecessarily for the county's shortsighted planning at this Hudson site.
