"Spend" is one of the right's big catch words. Rich Lowry's March 7 op-ed page column is filled with it. It appears that Lowry believes that somehow President Barack Obama wants to spend money like a shopaholic just for the joy of it.
According to the Wikipedia section on the national debt, between 1978 and 2005 federal spending increased by 9.9 percent under Democrats and 12.1 percent under Republicans. Federal debt increased 4.4 percent under Democrats and 36.4 percent under Republicans. And at the same time the GDP increased by 12.6 percent under Democrats and 10.7 percent under Republicans.
Admittedly, the Republicans were in longer and had more time to wreak economic havoc.
Lowry and his fellow conservatives should re-examine their borrow-and-spend philosophy.
It would also help if commentators on the out would suggest alternative solutions rather than carp at the guy who has the job.
