TARPON SPRINGS - Wednesday evening, the Tarpon Springs Public Library will commemorate the 188th anniversary of Greek independence with a performance by the Levendia Dance Troupe.
Levendia, which has seven performing dance groups and a collection of more than 600 costumes, were created to promote, preserve and perpetuate Greek folk culture.
The free performance will take place at the library building on Lemon Street starting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 11. Greek Independence Day is celebrated March 25.
On Sunday, March 29, thousands are expected to rally downtown to see lavishly decorated floats and hundreds of marchers participate in the annual Greek Independence Day Parade.
Those interested in learning more about traditional Greek dance can join the troupe for classes on Thursday nights in July at the Tarpon Springs Heritage Museum, said Gen Haley, spokeswoman for the city's Cultural and Civic Services Department.
For reservation or more information about either events call 727-937-0686, she said.
The 30-year-old Levendia is now a model for dance groups in other communities looking to perpetuate cultural dance. With more than 250 members ranging in age from 6 to 60, the troupe has performed around the country, in Canada and on five trips to Greece.
