Two recent, seemingly innocuous, events made me fear for our future. The first was the elation at President Barack Obama's inauguration – not by his supporters, but by the millions celebrating the notion their upcoming handouts assured their and America's future.
The second was a letter Obama cited in his congressional address from a girl writing about her school. What was frightening was her statement of how dedicated she and her classmates were to becoming lawyers and members of Congress. The attendant lawyers and Congress members lustily cheered.
Lawyers and congressmen create nothing, build nothing and produce nothing. Their only function is to profit by taking from those who do. If our schools are teaching our children that lawyers and politicians are of real benefit to society, instead of teaching them to become scientists, builders and doctors, we are finished as a free nation.
Our epitaph will say our demise was brought about by our reliance upon a government dedicated only to growing its power over us. It does this by taking from those who would produce and giving to those who would not, destroying our initiative, self-reliance and productive capital – while the rest of the world passed us by.
