HOLIDAY - Five Pasco County firefighters and paramedics recently received recognition for rescuing two victims from a burning home.

Commissioners applauded Todd T. Pierce, captain-paramedic; David N. Miller, driver engineer-EMT; James T. Schultz, firefighter-paramedic; Philip A. Larkin, firefighter-EMT; and Benjamin D. Oliver, firefighter-EMT.

They responded to a fire in Holiday Lake Estates at 2:33 a.m. on Aug. 17, 2008.

Within six minutes of the alarm, the engine company and rescue company from Station 12 arrived. Despite heavy smoke, the rescuers found the first victim lying unresponsive on the kitchen floor and moved her outside to start advanced life support.

The emergency workers then went back inside the house with a thermal-imaging camera to find the second victim unconscious in a bedroom and evacuated him.

"Both teenage victims are alive today and have been provided the opportunity to enjoy the rest of their lives because of the quick response, tactical decisions, and strategic actions" by the Station 12 personnel, the county proclamation reads in part.
