PORT RICHEY - Yes they can - literally!
Entrants in the second annual Canstruction Design/Build Competition will create figures made entirely from cans of food.
The Volunteer Way Food bank benefits from the event, which will take place at the Gulf View Square mall from April 26 until May 2.
Architects, engineers, contractors, designers or students with professional guidance are invited to make the canned structures.
Canstruction offers a chance not only to contribute in the fight against hunger, but also promote public spirit and generate good will, Martha O'Brien, assistant chief executive officer of Volunteer Way, explained.
Sponsors of Canstruction can promote their business, products or services and at the same time help the less fortunate of our community, O'Brien said in a press release.
Visitors will have the opportunity to cast a ballot for their favorite structure. The winner will receive the People's Choice Award.
The organizers also are looking volunteers, O'Brien reports.
At the end of the competition, all canned food items will be donated to Volunteer Way, which distributes more than 6 million pounds of free food to low-income and homeless families, seniors, food pantries, soup kitchens, and other charitable organizations in Pasco, Pinellas, Hillsborough and Hernando counties.
For more information or to register, contact O'Brien at 727-815-0433 or martha@thevolunteerway.org.
