Zephyrhills hires 3 new coaches

The Zephyrhills coaching staff welcomes three new faces to the fold. Athletic director Bruce Cimorelli announced former Saint Leo baseball assistant Chad Sommers will take over the baseball job and Zephyrhills alumnus Robyn Crist and Ken Burgess will take over the girls golf program.

Sommers, who once coached the Florida Collegiate Summer League Zephyrhills Snappers, takes over for Cimorelli, who led the Bulldogs from 1997 to 2009.

"We're really excited about having Chad here," Cimorelli said. "He's real energetic, a good person, a good community guy and should do real well with the baseball job."

Crist, the former Robyn Rinaldo, is a former LPGA player who earned All-Southeastern Conference honors each of her four years at Ole Miss.

"They both bring great credentials to the table," Cimorelli said of Burgess and Crist. "Kenny's been around 20 years, a great guy in the community, very organized and structured. Robyn, with her track record of being at Ole Miss, All-SEC, on the LPGA Tour, she's a professional."

COLLEGE-BOUND: Bulldogs Joe Maldonado and Corey Christensen will take their wares to college in the fall, former Zephyrhills football coach Tom Fisher said.

Maldonado, who was versatile enough to play running back, linebacker and on the offensive line, will head to Division III Blufton (Ohio) College. Meanwhile, Christensen, a center/tight end, is headed to NAIA Midland Lutheran College in Nebraska.

"Joey was one of our better players last year and he was my captain for the defense," Fisher said. "He was a backup offensive back and then we ran into a bunch of injuries last year and he was the kind of kid that said, 'Coach, I'll play on the offensive line.'"

Christensen played center as a junior, switching to tight end during the start of his senior. Team injuries forced him back to the line during the season.
