The National High School Coaches Association named Mitchell ace Patrick Schuster its Senior Athlete of the Year for baseball. The selection wasn't a difficult one considering Schuster tossed a state record four consecutive no-hitters this season. That broke a 22-year-old Florida record.
The 6-foot-3 left-hander, who was drafted in the 13th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks last week, completed this season with an 8-1 record. In the process, Schuster struck out 115 batters, had an ERA of 0.93 and allowed just 16 hits in 60 innings of work.
At one point, Schuster pitched 29 consecutive no-hit innings.
At the plate, Schuster, who has signed a letter-of-intent to play for the University of Florida, collected a .403 batting average with 21 RBIs and 21 runs scored.
Schuster also became the first Pasco County baseball player to be named Florida's Mr. Baseball by the Florida Dairy Farmers.
