TRINITY - Mitchell High standout Patrick Schuster was named the 2009 recipient of Florida's Mr. Baseball Award, which is presented by Florida Dairy Farmers.
Schuster, a left-handed pitcher/first baseman, made national headlines this season for the Mustangs after throwing four consecutive no-hitters, a state record and two shy of the national record. The standout left-hander finished with five no-hitters on the season while going 8-1 with a 0.93 ERA. Schuster also hit .403 with 21 RBIs. Schuster was one of six finalists for the award after previously being named the state's Class 6A player of the year.
Schuster is the first Pasco County player to win the award.
Plant High's Mychal Givens was one of the six finalists for the award as the Class 5A player of the year. Givens finished third in the overall voting.
In addition, Cambridge Christian baseball coach Rick Shears was one of six finalists for the state's overall coaching award after previously being named the 1A coach of the year. Shears finished sixth in the voting for the overall award.
