NEW PORT RICHEY - Concerned some Pasco residents are stuck in the slow lane of the information highway, a group of leaders will gather July 23 about expanding high-speed, broadband Internet access here.
A regional consortium could leverage a share of $7.2 billion in federal stimulus dollars to improve access, according to an invitation sent by Katherine M. Johnson, president of Pasco-Hernando Community College.
"Particular emphasis is placed on providing broadband access in unserved and underserved rural areas," Johnson wrote. Florida could reap an estimated $450 million from the stimulus fund.
"I believe this federal stimulus funding opportunity can be the spark that brings together all interested organizations in our area to build out a technology infrastructure that urban areas take for granted," Johnson added.
The proposed consortium might be called the "Pasco-Hernando Innovation Network."
