LAKE BUENA VISTA - The West Florida Young Guns U9 baseball team proved itself to be not simply the state's greatest, but the best in all the land.
The Young Guns' season of superlatives ended at Disney's Wide World of Sports with yet another - winning the 2009 AAU National Championship.
After coming back from an 8 - 1 deficit to beat a highly touted Piranhas team out of Miami in the semifinals, the Young Guns defeated the Central Florida Legends to secure the title.
"We were able to win and accomplish what we did this year because we stuck together and we played hard," Young Guns head coach Jim Mattos said.
Five players - Jakob Mattos, Johnny Oliveira, Gunnar Hoglund, Jake Hartman and Justin Skelton - were all named to the All-Tournament team.
Leading up to the tournament, the Young Guns had not lost a game all season in its age group. It's only defeat was to the Piranhas earlier in the National Championships.
The Suncoast-based team also stepped up to win two U10 tournaments this season and placed second in three others.
