This summer youngsters enrolled in Tarpon Springs' summer camp program are doing more than just playing games and going on field trips.

They are repainting donated wooden chairs with their own designs for charity, an idea suggested by the city's Public Arts Committee.

Cassidy Crumblin said she likes the summer camp project. It helps her "express my creativity," the 12-year-old said.

At the start of the camp season, the city's recreation division requested people donate enough wooden chairs for all the youngsters at the Tarpon Springs Recreation Center, on Walton Avenue, and in Craig Park.

Many people donated all sorts of wooden chairs, with others purchased at yard sales and other discount places, Daniela Smyth, recreation supervisor, said.

Public Arts Committee Chairwoman Marlene Gravitz, who proposed the project, said it is a wonderful way to educate young people about art.

The chairs will be auctioned to provide camp scholarships, so youngsters also enjoy the idea that it will help others, she said.

Chairs will be auctioned on the last day of camp.

The auction will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 24, at the Tarpon Springs Recreation Center.

The project, Gravitz said, involved a lot more than just having youngsters repaint chairs.

They must work in teams and come up with a design. Chairs are then sanded down and the design created on each chair.

Youngsters became really interested in the project and looked forward to painting their chairs, Smyth said.

It was a great addition to the summer games and field trips. She said members of the Art Committee and local artists enjoyed mentoring the youngsters.

It really sparked creativity. Some of the ideas the youngsters came up with are intricate, Smyth noted.

Next year another item might be repainted and auctioned, perhaps even skateboards, she said.
