Inaugural amateur golf tourney to kick off at Fox Hollow

TRINITY - The weekend of July 18 and 19 will mark the beginning of a new yearly condition within the North Suncoast golf community.

At least that is what Fox Hollow Golf Club's head pro, Matt Cote, is anticipating with the launch of the first CARES Tampa Bay Amateur Tournament.

The two-day, 36-hole event is open to any male amateur with a certified USGA handicap. Golfers will be divided into different handicap flights and will compete under individual stroke play rules.

The tourney has a cap of 120 slots available and is hoping for at least 100 golfers for the first year, Cote said.

"Outside of the Innisbrook Amateur Championship, there is really no other good amateur tournament in the area," he said.

No USGA amateur points will be awarded to those who place in the CARES Tampa Bay Amateur Tournament, but that is the eventual goal, Cote said. "We're really trying to start a tradition here."

Winners of each flight will receive a trophy and there will be an official tournament trophy that will remain on display in the clubhouse at Fox Hollow.

The entry fee for the tournament is $150. That includes golf and cart fees for both rounds, range balls prior to each round, and prizes.

A portion of the proceeds go toward Community Aging and Retirement Services. CARES, a Pasco-based social services agency, is the tournament's lead sponsor.

"CARES promotes quality of life and independence for adults and seniors through health, social and supportive services" so that elders can "age positively and with dignity," according to its organizational Web site.
