Summer science project

Students from several Pasco County elementary schools got a break from summer break by attending a three-week science camp.

The Pasco County School District offered the free camps to students at Title I schools, which receive extra funding from the federal government because they have a high percentage of children from low-income families.

More than 400 students participated in the camps, which were held at the district's Energy & Marine Center, in Port Richey, Pasco County's Starkey Environmental Education Center, in the New Port Richey area, Cross Bar Ranch, in the Land O' Lakes area, and Crystal Springs Preserve, in southeastern Pasco County.

Each Title I school in the county sent 25 students. The students had to be enrolled in the free and reduced-price meal program, and principals also had criteria to decide which of their students would benefit the most.

The district spent $35,000 in Title I money to operate the camps, which ended June 25. Most of the money was used to staff the camps and pay for bus drivers to provide transportation from the students' home schools, said Summer Romagnoli, a district spokeswoman.

She said the goal was to give the children hands-on experience in science and improve their science scores.
