I have a solution to the problem of what to do with the 250 or so prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, aka "Gitmo," which President Barack Obama has ordered closed within a year.
Within the continental U.S.A. there exists the famous former prison – make that tourist attraction – Alcatraz. Drop the current Guantanamo prisoners off at the boat dock on The Rock with no guards or prison staff. Arrange for food to be delivered to the dock on a weekly basis.
Do not, however, provide them with radios, televisions, computers, cell phones or newspapers. Let them take care of themselves. History has it that only one convict ever escaped from this federal penitentiary in San Francisco Bay.
Now if that suggestion doesn't fly, how about the infamous Devil's Island? This former French penal colony off the coast of South America is also surrounded by lots of water – the Atlantic Ocean. They can grow their food in gardens. I don't believe anyone has ever escaped from there either.
I'm sure some do-gooders would think these approaches would be inhumane. So what?
