Sex is still a mystery.
That is the default conclusion of the characters in an over-the-top comedy now playing at the Richey Suncoast Theatre.
In "My Husband's Wild Desires Almost Drove Me Mad," an upper middle class New York couple tries to spice up a waning sex life by following the advice of a sex guru to act out their sexual fantasies.
A burglar played by Bob Marcela sets the play's theme of plans going awry when he gets his mask caught in the door as he breaks into the couple's apartment on Manhattan's tony Upper East Side.
As the play continues, the tattooed husband turns into a cross dresser clad in a pink dress and the wife channels an 18th century French aristocrat. The two enlist the help of the hapless burglar, a voyeuristic apartment superintendent and a relative whose husband has just left her. The result is comical chaos.
"It's a crazy little comedy. It's especially good for troubled times," said director Bob Reece about the laugh-a-minute farce.
Reece, a retired computer programmer, has previously directed Richey Suncoast productions of "The Odd Couple" and "Night Watch." Additionally, he has directed productions for regional theater groups including Stage West Community Playhouse, in Hernando County, and Players of Safety Harbor.
The five members of the cast, Bob Marcela, Linda Luckenbach, Bill Schommer, Jim Poe and Stella Sylvester, have all appeared in previous Richey Suncoast plays.
According to Reece, the Richey production marks the play's debut in the area. It was written by John Tobias and published in 1980.
