Art Of Recycling Exhibit Opens Jan. 20

NEW PORT RICHEY - High school students have once again turned trash into treasure for the annual Art of Recycling contest.

An exhibit of entries, made from recyclable junked items, will open to the public this Tuesday, Jan. 20, according to Jennifer L. Seney, Pasco County's recycling coordinator.

The display will be set up in the lobby of the West Pasco Government Center, 7530 Little Road.

A ceremony at which contest winners will be announced will take place 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, at the government center. Attendees can vote for the People's Choice Award prior to the ceremony. Pizza and soft drinks will be served at the event.

On Feb. 18, winning entries will be transferred to the Pasco County School District headquarters in Land O' Lakes, where they will be displayed for a week.

The art is judged on many different themes, Seney explained. The 12 contest categories include Best Use of Newspaper, Most Innovative and Best Environmental Concept.

More than $2,200 in cash prizes will be presented to the winners.

In addition, participating seniors are competing for a $1,000 art scholarship.

The exhibit and art contest is a co-operative project of the School District, Pasco County Utilities Recycling and the Pasco Arts Council.

The event is supported by the following community businesses, organizations and individuals: Central Carting Disposal, RESORCE Recycling Club, Covanta Energy, Sierra Foundation, Dobies Funeral Home, Simpson Environmental Services, Figurski & Harrill law firm, Waste Aid, Keep Pasco Beautiful, Waste Express, Commissioner Pat Mulieri, Waste Management, Pasco Arts Council, Alan and Anita Weinstein, Seaside Sanitation and WilsonMiller Inc.
