A community orchestra is set to join forces with an area jazz vocalist to pay tribute to some of the great female jazz singers of our time.
The Richey Community Orchestra will present "First Ladies of Jazz" with Sarasota singer Katt Hefner on Sunday, Jan. 18, in Port Richey.
According to the orchestra's executive director, Denise Isaacson, Hefner is one of the area's foremost interpreters of the great women jazz artists, including Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horne.
Hefner, who has a range of three octaves, has credits including off-Broadway musicals and international cruises. She has appeared with international rhythm-and-blues stars like Patti LaBelle, The Temptations and Luther Vandross.
She has always felt close to the jazz era, Hefner said. "That genre was the pulse of life. They wrote down their lives in music."
Songs she will perform Jan. 18 include "Honeysuckle Rose," "Stormy Weather" and "Embraceable You."
Hefner has previously performed with the orchestra and is looking forward to Sunday's appearance. "Just to be able to sing with the band again and work with that caliber of musicians is a treat."
In addition to Hefner's performance, Resident Conductor Robert Boyd will lead the orchestra in "In the Mood," made famous by the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and other swing favorites.
The Richey Community Orchestra is Pasco County's only symphony orchestra. It has a membership of about 50 professional and amateur musicians.
