NEW PORT RICHEY - The city made tracks to the past with the dedication of its Railroad Square Streetscape Project on Jan. 9.
The 21st century tipped its hat to the 20th century roots of New Port Richey with the fully functional railroad crossing arms as decorations along Nebraska Avenue at Grand Boulevard and at Adams Street.
It's been about half a century since a train has rumbled down tracks in the West Pasco area.
After city officials cut the ribbon, the crossing arm was raised during a demonstration for curious residents, especially youngsters. The bell clanged as the twin red lights alternately flashed.
The railroad crossing arms will serve as crowd control devices during festivals to block traffic from certain streets.
The city spent about $457,000 through its Community Redevelopment Agency on the project to help dress up the downtown area.
