SAINT PETERSBURG - The Mitchell High girls soccer team displayed its toughness and ability to grind out close matches Thursday night by edging Class 6A, District 7 rival St. Pete 1-0.

The victory also brings a close to district play for the Mustangs. They will be the No. 1 seed during the district tournament later this month after finished 4-0-1.

After playing to a 0-0 tie at halftime, Mitchell sophomore forward Arielle Anahory caught the Green Devils' goalkeeper out of position and lobbed a high, arching shot that bounded uncontested to the back of the net.

The goal came during the 13th minute of the second half.

"I knew this one was going to be tough, actually. We know how each other play," Mustang forward Marisa Russo said, mentioning that many of the girls are familiar with St. Pete players through club soccer.

The typically high-scoring Mustangs (12-1-2) were not without their opportunities early in the contest. Russo, along with teammates Anahory, Shelby Wright and Jessica Jagielski, pressured the St. Pete defense on multiple occasions, but the Green Devil back row continuously was there to make stops.

St. Pete nearly lit the scoreboard first right as the second half began. A first-minute corner kick looked to be deflected in, but Mitchell defender Raquel Pimentel acted as a second goalkeeper and booted the ball safely out of the zone.

That was the first of Mitchell's key, second-half stops, as St. Pete amped up its attack after falling behind. Green Devil forward Sarah Parker just missed wide left on an open look during the 16th minute and then St. Pete could not convert on a corner kick, free kick and cross pass that all came within a three minute span.

Mitchell will hit the pitch again Friday night to host Ridgewood High.
