Greg Armstrong was correct when he wrote in his Jan. 3 op-ed page column that we must come up with programs, projects and incentives to create jobs. President-elect Barack Obama has consistently said that he plans to put several million people to work expanding our infrastructure once he takes office. The problem I have with this is that not once have I heard Obama say he is going to put Americans to work, only people.
Because of Obama's past poor record on immigration reform I fear that many of these jobs will go to illegal aliens currently in the U.S. and will encourage more to come. With millions of Americans and legal residents out of work, this should not be allowed to happen.
Many of the jobs Obama plans to create will be in the construction industry, which is notorious for employing illegal aliens at wages at which Americans cannot afford to work. Obama and his Democrat pals in Congress have rebuffed all efforts to make E-Verify, now a voluntary system through which employers can quickly and at no cost check the eligibility of applicants to work in the U.S., mandatory, or to even extend it beyond March 31.
I encourage all reading this to contact their members of Congress today and demand that E-Verify be made mandatory.
