Energy Enigma

Editor:

I just read your article on the Progress Energy rate hike, which as a customer I will be hit with. Frankly I am very surprised by this, as fuel costs have gone down so much since this time last year. Not only that but why are we investing in nuclear power when we should be concentrating on solar energy?

Here we are, in one of the sunniest states in the U.S., and we are still not using this valuable resource. It would be practically free, with the exception of the cost of bringing it to the people. The power companies should start to concentrate more on this resource than nuclear. We should be sharing our existing nuclear resources.

Florida Power & Light, in South Florida, has announced it is going to reduce its customer bills. Why is it able to do that but Progress Energy has to raise its rates?

If it were up to the people, we wouldn't be in this mess. We would be able to choose who we wanted as a power company and that would be that. But the lawmakers have made this impossible to do.

I am interested in finding out what it would take to convert my home to solar power and cut out the big utility companies all together. If you know of companies here in this state that can install and convert your home over, I would be interested in getting their information.
