Main Street Group To Hold Community Garage Sale

NEW PORT RICHEY - As spring cleaning time comes around this year many households are looking at their clutter with imaginary dollar signs attached, hoping to clear a small profit as they clear out their closets.

If you're among those thinking about having a garage sale in the near future, why go it alone, depending on sad little hand-written signs on the street corner to draw customers?

There's strength in numbers, and it's more fun. At least that's the thinking behind Greater New Port Richey Main Street organizers' plan to hold a Community Garage Sale from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. this Saturday as part of its Saturday Downtown Market.

The weekly market takes place along Nebraska Avenue, off Grand Boulevard. The Feb. 28 garage sale will take place in the adjacent Cavalaire Square area, east of Grand Boulevard between Nebraska and Missouri avenues.

"The time of the year is perfect for a garage sale, and with today's economy, it makes sense to sell some unneeded items cluttering the house," said Judy DeBella Thomas, executive director of Greater New Port Richey Main Street. "At the same time, people are looking to save money on something they need, that someone else may not want."

At next Saturday weekly market and garage sale, Corey Rubin, musician and owner of the recently opened Bobagrees Downtown Music School, will provide light entertainment.

Table space for the garage sale is available for $10, and sellers will have to provide their own table, chairs and any sunshade. All sorts of household items can be sold, Thomas said, but sellers should refrain from bringing furniture to sell because of space limitations.

At the end of the sale the Good Connections thrift store will be there to happily accept unsold items sellers don't want to have to take home, Thomas said.

Applications for the community garage sale must be filled out in advance, and are available by calling Greater New Port Richey Main Street at 727-842-8066.
