On Feb. 13, my wife was the second car in line to exit onto northbound U.S. 19 from the Hudson Wal-Mart parking lot. A selfish and careless driver traveling much too fast decided to turn into Wal-Mart. His turn took him into the exiting lane of the Wal-Mart driveway. The man in front of my wife was able to get out of the way, she was not. His large pickup plowed into the front of my wife's Honda head on. Thanks to this man's carelessness my wife has air bag burns and neck and back injuries.
He has a ticket for careless driving. Big deal.
On Memorial Day Weekend 2007, an elderly woman violated my son's right of way while he was riding his motorcycle westbound on S.R. 52, killing him. She got a ticket but only after I contested the error-filled Florida Highway Patrol crash report.
Florida traffic laws are in need of a makeover. These careless, incompetent, selfish and self-important drivers who do not know the rules of the road or care not to heed them should face harsher penalties.
