NEW PORT RICHEY - Troy Donaldson today earned the title of Pasco County Employee of the Year.
County Commission Chairman Jack Mariano presented the proclamation to Donaldson for his bravery helping a traffic accident victim on July 30, 2008.
A county employee since January 2002, Donaldson regularly crisscrosses Pasco as part of his duties as a telephone technician II for the county communications division.
He was traveling on U.S. 41 in the Land O' Lakes area when he saw a tractor-trailer truck overturn in front of him. The driver was trapped in the rig, so Donaldson could not free him. The driver was drifting in and out of consciousness.
Donaldson had the presence of mind to ask the driver the contents of the vehicle to be able to advise emergency workers in case it might present a hazard. Donaldson then remained with the driver until rescuers arrived.
Donaldson demonstrated "outstanding initiative and bravery as well as disregard for his own personal safety," the county proclamation reads in part, "in assisting a citizen in a potentially life threatening situation."
Donaldson received a standing ovation from the audience at today's County Commission meeting.
