Millie Dillmount wasn't in Kansas any more.

So, she did what any young modern woman who had just arrived in New York City from Salina, Kan., during the flapper era might do. She decided to marry for money instead of love.

"Thoroughly Modern Millie" tells the comical story of the obstacles in the way of Millie's dreams. They include white slavery, a colorful hotel for women and a pompous boss. By the end of the play, Millie has learned something about both love and herself.

The musical will open Friday, Feb. 27, at the Show Palace Dinner Theatre in Hudson.

Show Palace newcomer Missy Dowse stars as Millie. Dowse previously was in a national tour of "Gypsy" and has had a number of roles in regional theater.

The "Thoroughly Modern Millie" musical opened on Broadway in 2002, with Sutton Foster in the title role. It captured six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It was based on the 1967 film of the same name that starred Julie Andrews.

Director Michael Ursua saw the play on Broadway. "They took the movie and made it amazing," he said. "They deserved every Tony they got."

He notes the production is a family-friendly production. Its message of blending independence with love seems to have a special appeal to young girls, he said.

Ursua is a Show Palace veteran. He has previously directed "Oliver" and "Annie Get Your Gun" and acted in "The Producers," which closed last Sunday.

The musical features 15 songs, including two from the 1967 film. "We're big on the vocals," Ursua noted. "I think people will be amazed at the singing. Paulette Dozier is a legitimate jazz singer and has a great voice."

Dozier is the recipient of a Carbonell Award, an honor given to outstanding theater work in South Florida.

Ursua also gives kudos to Costume Designer Angela Hoerner. The flapper period is among Hoerner's favorites, he noted. She has researched the era and recreates its feelings in her vibrant costumes.
