I am not a George W. Bush apologist – I'm a registered Libertarian – but I had to respond to the Feb. 4 letter to the editor that stated Bush "put us in the mess we're in."
That mess got its start from the Community Redevelopment Act, enacted by the Democrat Congress when Jimmy Carter was president. It sat somewhat dormant until Bill Clinton revived it. Then-Assistant Attorney General Jamie Garelick threatened banks and other lending institutions with discrimination lawsuits if they didn't lend money for houses, knowing they would lose money on the deals.
That was the beginning of this financial fiasco. The Republicans, however, are not blameless because they went along with it.
Houses became an ATM and the spending began. People thought it would never end. As with all nanny-state ideas we're all ending up paying.
Now Congress and the Obama administration are determined to perpetuate the fraud and put us deeper in the hole. Lord, help us.
