I want to congratulate Cheryl Bentley for her recent op-ed page columns. Her Jan. 31 column, "Welcome to the world, Muslims," was especially timely.
As I read it, though, I wondered how much "static" Bentley or The Suncoast News may get because of its call for Americans to be more accepting of Muslims. I'm sure it will serve to enlighten some readers and maybe infuriate others.
As I read between the lines in some television and newspaper commentary and Web content, the Hussein in President Barack Obama's name still raises hackles and even a disturbing commentary from some.
I did get a kick from Bentley's comment about white male superiority, my being a pseudo-white male with some Wampanoag Indian of Massachusetts. We white guys are discovering how damaging stereotyping can be.
We are in a new age that will see our nation become a melting pot that even the founding fathers would find astonishing.
