NEW PORT RICHEY - Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, can bring back fond memories of childhood years and serve to renew a sense of identity.
Such is the purpose of a community celebration on Monday, Dec. 14, Chabad Jewish Center of West Pasco officials say.
The fourth annual celebration is scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. at the Chelsea Place Shopping Center, 1346 Seven Springs Blvd., in New Port Richey.
The public is invited to the free festivities, which will include a public Menorah kindling ceremony with state Sen. Mike Fasano.
The event also will feature a large balloon Menorah, a balloon artist, potato latkes, doughnuts and gelt.
"It is a holiday that enriches our lives with the light of tradition," Paul J. Krupin, publicist on behalf of Rabbi Yossi Eber and the Chabad Jewish Center of West Pasco, explained in a press release.
"In ancient times our ancestors rededicated the Temple in Jerusalem with the Menorah. Today, we rededicate ourselves to making this world a better and brighter place."
The holiday "also propagates the universal message that ultimately good will prevail over evil, freedom over oppression and light over darkness."
In its outreach campaign, Chabad of West Pasco joins thousands of Chabad centers across the globe that are staging similar public displays of the Menorah and its symbolic lights.
From Australia to Africa, Columbia to Hong Kong, New York City's ground zero to the White House lawn, hundreds of thousands will experience the joys of the season.
