President Barack Obama should wake up. Our nation faces disturbing trends in the nuclear-weapons ambitions of North Korea and Iran and China's blatant acts in outer space. This leads me to question why the president, during a time of war, has refused to ask Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to propose a major Pentagon spending plan. This is totally unwarranted.
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the president's proposed defense budget is fundamentally inadequate. For one thing, it reduces the number of Navy aircraft carriers to 10. Moreover, Gates has decided to end production of the stealth F-22 Raptor fighter jet, which outclasses anything else in the sky. The $1.4 billion cut in missile defense is also troubling.
It is obvious the Pentagon has to tolerate tough budget cuts. We will be in danger, however, if Obama continues to follow the weak defense and foreign policies of the Carter and Clinton administrations.
