Even in communities with histories of governance less colorful than that of the city of Port Richey, it can be dangerous to read too much into the results of a single election. Still, people might infer from last week's municipal election in Port Richey that the latest attempt to do away with the city will end the same way all the others have over the decades.
There weren't many issues over which the two candidates for the lone City Council seat being contested in the April 14 election battled during the campaign. There was, however, one big difference between the Port Richey candidates. Amy Scott was for doing away with the city. Bill Colombo wanted to keep the city intact. The City Council has been moving forward with a referendum on dissolution since receiving a petition calling for an end to Port Richey, the consistent record of failure of such efforts over the years notwithstanding.
Colombo, for the benefit of anyone not paying attention, beat Scott, polling nearly 67 percent of the votes cast. It would be hard not to read something into that.
