Rich Lowry's April 4 op-ed column was right on the money. For those who believe that the president or his Cabinet members can succeed in correcting our current economic problems, consider this:
We haven't won a war since World War II, when President Roosevelt told generals Eisenhower and McArthur to simply win. We didn't win in Korea because President Truman wouldn't let McArthur push the North Koreans back to the Yalu River. In Vietnam presidents Johnson and Nixon wouldn't let the military fight to win. In the 1991 Gulf War, we could have driven right through Iraq but President George H. W. Bush stopped us.
And, now the same sort of politicians are telling us what kind of cars we can drive, light bulbs we can use, and who will run the companies that make those products. If our new president wants to straighten out the auto industry, let him ask former Chrysler CEO Lee Iacocca, not some tax-dodging political hacks.
