BAYONET POINT - The Publix supermarket at U.S. 19 and S.R. 52 will close May 2, a corporate spokeswoman confirmed today.
All 88 employees at the Point Plaza store, at 12031 U.S. 19, will be offered transfers to other Publix stores, according to Shannon Patten, media and community relations manager for the Central and South West Florida district of the Lakeland-based supermarket chain.
"Nobody will lose their jobs," Patten said in a telephone interview.
The grocer will encourage customers of the Bayonet Point store to switch to the larger Publix a few miles to the east, at Little Road and S.R. 52. Publix remodeled the former Albertson's location at 12101 Little Road and opened it in December, Patten said.
