An Opportune Time

Published: April 1, 2009

If something we read recently is correct, then the old saw about the Chinese ideogram for the word crisis being made up of one element denoting danger and the other opportunity is wrong. Regardless, Pasco County is facing a bit of a budget crisis because of falling revenue. So while the county's taxing and spending status quo appears in danger, Pasco officials are taking the opportunity to take a look at how Pasco will change over the next few years and how county government will fit into that change.

The county is holding a series of public meetings as part of this "Leap Into Excellence" review. For example, a meeting on growth management and economic development will be held 7 - 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at the Performing Arts Center at Pasco-Hernando Community College West Campus, 10230 Ridge Road, New Port Richey.

One goal Pasco officials have is finding out how residents want their county to grow and what services they are willing to pay for, according to Chief Assistant County Administrator Michele Baker. Pinellas County has the same budget woes and is holding a similar series of public meeting at which it is asking, with a bit more bluntness, what services its residents are willing to do without.

Since county officials say they want to hear from the public, it would be a shame if the public were to stay away tonight and miss the other meetings in the series.
